The Sweet Taste

I don’t post a lot of political views on this site, because it is not really what I want it to become. I leave that to the screeching millennials trying to fight against/save…whatever is the outrage du jour. I started off the week with a noticeable bitter tang, after LSU’s defeat on Saturday by our Maroon friends two states over to the right. It was so close. The defense took their eyes the quarterback for one moment in the fourth quarter and he gutted us. Final score was a disappointing 10-0. Other than that, it was a hard fought game.

I was filled with quite a bit of trepidation then when it came to the election. I had sent my vote in about 1 and 1/2 weeks before, paying China Mail a grand total of $27 to get it there on time. It did. I was not able to see the results on Tuesday, of course, so I went to eat with a friend (a Hillary supporter) at Khan Baba – my favorite Pakistani restaurant in Beijing. It was there that I finally saw Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania called for Trump and knew that it was over. I was particularly gracious by not crowing about it.

If you have doubts about my political bent, let me be blunt then. I am a Republican. I have been one my whole life and I came close this time with splitting from the party. I will vote for Trump. Not because I like him, but more for the fact that I abhor the Clintons with every bone in my body. Never has a grasping, more greedy duo ever stepped into that cesspool of villainy, Washington, D.C. I was originally for Scott Walker and then Ted Cruz. To be more blunt, I would vote for the Anti-Christ over Hillary Clinton. Many on the left would say I already did if they were willing to couch it those terms. I personally find Trump to be an ass, but he is now my ass.

**Update**
The election reactions were as I expected. Children revolting and the revolting child-like. Seriously, your symbol is a safety pin? I woke up this morning with a sense of satisfaction that has been elusive for several years. I will not have to hear Hillary’s voice (and hopefully Pres. Empty Suit and his wife’s) ever again. Oh blessed day! Also, seen online:

LSU 42 – Missouri 7

This past Saturday (Sunday for me) provided the dawn of a new era for LSU. After the Tiger’s embarrassing last minute loss to Auburn due to ignoring the play clock, Coach Les Miles was fired by the Athletic Department. He was a great coach and I suspected that this was going to occur after the loss to Wisconsin. So, a 12 year relationship is done. I wish Coach Les all the best in whatever he does from now. Coach Orgeron has taken over the reigns in the interim. So far, I have been hearing all kinds of talk about a new coach coming in, but Orgeron performed spectacularly in his first game. If he can keep up momentum and defeat Alabama, he might have the final spot.

On to the game. I was impressed by the heart displayed, especially by the two backs, Guice and Williams. The offence, even without Fournette (ankle injury), played smash mouth football. They gained 634 yards, the most against an SEC school in LSU history. On offense, the only issue was with Danny Etling. He was cool in the pocket and performed great. The only criticism was the fact that he has difficulty hitting backs in stride down the field. He has the arm, in fact perhaps too much of it, often overthrowing the receivers. The defense was almost flawless. I particularly want to give a shout out to the D-backs, as I have been very harsh toward them the last few weeks. I saw more man coverage and those guys did fantastic, holding Mizzou to 265 yards (167 passing). Mizzou’s only score was off a gimmick play in the fourth quarter. An excellent recap is here, ironically provided by the Mizzou Network.

It will be interesting to see if this can be replicated against teams with much stronger defenses – Florida next week and in particular, Alabama.

Super Bowl XLVII

Last night I enjoyed perhaps the second greatest championship game in my memory. The first of course was when the Saints beat the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. I still remember that day. I was living in Chengdu and had to get up at 5:00 in the morning due to the time difference. I went down to a sports bar. I had been watching games on my laptop but I had really bad internet service in the dorms. I ordered a steak and egg breakfast that morning and it was pretty good. I was talking to a man from Iowa when Tracy Porter intercepted the ball with but a few minutes left. That moment will stay with me forever. Decades of shame reversed in a few moments. But, I digress.

The battle between the Ravens and the 49ers was epic. I thought that in the beginning the 49ers had better playing ability, especially with their quarterback, Colin Kaepernick. His speed and passing ability were utterly amazing. However, the Ravens were able to take a large, early lead. At half, I think there was something like a 21 or so point deficit. The Ravens seemingly had it in the bag. After the half, however, the 49ers came screaming back. It basically came down to the wire. In the punt before the end of the game, I want to point out for consistency sake that one of the 49ers defensive players was egregiously held. I think it was pretty damn blatant, but since I was going for Baltimore I will let it slide.

Now about the half-time show. While I am not a fan of Beyoncé, I think that she is a very talented singer. R&B is just not my style of music. Damn nice legs though. Although a lot of people seemed to really like the show, I was left with the question of what did it all mean. This also leaves the question of whether she helped cause the 34 minute blackout with her over use of lighting. I first heard about it on Facebook from my brother, Dougie. Seems that multiple sources are reporting that her rehearsals had caused a similar situation and it was something that the NFL people knew. I don’t know if her show was more powerful than any other or whether this was circumstance stemming from the whole ‘green Super Bowl’ extolled by Herr President. Let the conspiracy theories begin.

Finally, the winner for me in commercials was the Dodge “Farmer” narrated by the great Paul Harvey. The runner up was the Montana land Tide commercial.

Another Week in Review 11/12-11/19 – Victory

This past week, I was able to finally finish the rough draft of my thesis. So, at this moment I am in a moment of euphoria, ephemeral though it is. I exist in the moment between all the hard work to produce and the sudden drop in hope that comes when your professor informs you that what you have written is scut. I know this day is quickly approaching in the next day or so, but I will enjoy what I have now. I hope that it is redeemable, but look to go in with low expectations. That way, everything can only go up.

Also, I was again able to enjoy some hotpot with my old classmates, Lisa and Quincy. Also, another friend, Chad, was able to join us as well. I am always of two minds about situations such as these. I have fun and did have fun, but realize that sometimes I make an utter ass of myself with some conversational topics. As you may guess, I don’t get out much. I did enjoy speaking with them though and look forward to next time.

On Saturday, I went to a gun show down in Sandy, UT. I mostly went out of curiosity, to see if they were any better than the ones back home. Nope. There was the usual assortment of nice stuff clashing ever so badly with a myriad assortment of pawn shop junk. The one difference was the lines. I got there about 20 minutes after it started and I was about 250 or more in line. A lot of people coming out scared of a potential Obama gun ban. I do not experience that fear, because I know that guns will never be banned. Oh, laws may be passed and some may give theirs up. However, I try to explain to people that guns are frightening simple pieces of equipment. All you need is a mill, lathe, and mechanical press. You can start putting out stuff en masse. Watch old videos of freedom fighter arsenals in WWII or go to Youtube and search for Pakistan gun market. Those are made by hand in caves. Modern know-how merged with the right equipment and Dianne Feinstein can kiss my Southern lily-white ~~~. You get the picture.

On the football front, both LSU and the Saints did rather well. LSU barely scraped by against Old Miss. While I don’t have as visceral a reaction against them as I do Alabama, I find that my heart is big enough to widen my hate. Those damn cowbells, rot their souls. I would hate them enough for just that. The Saints last week gave the Falcons their first taste of nastiness. This week it was the Oakland Raiders. Ok, they suck worse than we do, but I liked smoking them. Seems all we need to get the fire back in our pants was the return of Joe Vick. For those of you not in the know, Ol’ Joe was one of the coaches penalized for the bounty scandal and banned for half the season. Next year we should get Peyton back and kick some real tail.

In a final note, I just started a video lecture series on the Civil War that is pretty engrossing for me. Something to do between watching football and writing papers.

Football and Elections – Only Slightly Bitter

This week I have tasted defeat like nothing before. I was defeated by those pansies in Alabama that continue to use a silly euphemism for menstruating as their sports’ greeting. Then that defeat was overshadowed by the national tragedy that occurred on election night. First, let’s start with LSU, because it is the most optimistic of the two outcomes. LSU played its heart out and Mettenburger impressed me like never before. We had a better offense than at any time in the last 2-3 years. The defense played phenomenally as well. The stupid decision to play a prevent defense inside the red box is not their responsibility nor was the outcome. The sheer joy of watching the team kick Alabama’s bloody red ass was joyous, tinged only with a slight bitterness that a great quarterback was able to pull off a victory by the skin of his teeth. Our team is young and by what I saw on Saturday night, is going to rock the football world next year. If the coaches don’t get in the way, of course.

The Saints won on Sunday. It was against the Eagles, of course, who stink as bad as we do. However, I will take a W anyway I can get it. Next week will be against the undefeated Falcons. A victory here will improve me immensely.

On to last night. I have only one word really – suck. Around half of the country voted to re-elect a man who is fiscally ignorant. Many people believe that the economy will bounce back no matter who was elected, as if policy had no effect on it. They will be disillusioned. We are staring at a fiscal cliff, with higher taxes coming from the end of the Bush tax cuts as well as the Obamacare nightmare. To help with spending, Bernanke is talking more quantitative easing so our dollars are worth less, teasing at real hyperinflation. We will restrict energy output, meaning that gas prices will rise. All of this means that companies will contract – limiting expansion and layoffs or forgoing new hires. In a few years, we will become Greece, with a $21 trillion debt. The takers have prevailed and the givers will become fewer.

In all of this, I did not become depressed. I am actually more worried about the writer’s block preventing me from finishing my thesis, which is already several days late. My lack of depression stems from 3 areas: 1. I learned from the 2 ½ years of depression that I experienced with my mother’s passing. It solves nothing and merely holds me from accomplishing my goals. 2. We are Americans and by the end of the day will still be the biggest maggot on top of the dung heap. I look at China’s problems and weep. 3. I am, and always have been, a believer in the return of Jesus Christ. The scriptures say that it will only get worse before the end. With this in mind, I can only bitterly cling to “my guns and religion” until that great day comes. I will survive and overcome all things, even the disappointment that this week has given me.

God Bless America!

Ups and Downs of a Football Weekend

This weeks’ events in Louisiana football were bittersweet for me – LSU with its first loss and the Saints with their first win. It really stinks losing to Florida, although it will be much worse losing to those “people” two states over. I really want to gloat to Mr. Cy (my brother’s ex-father-in-law) on Facebook. He is always posting about those menstruating pachyderms. Other than this issue, I have always had a great deal of respect for him. I really want to upset their national ambitions. I would like a SEC team to win the National Championship again, consolidating our football superiority on the rest of the nation, but not Alabama. Saban is the devil, to bring in a Water Boy paraphrase.

For the Saints, it was a great weekend because we finally finally finally won. They had been playing tight with the rest of their opponents but just could not get the W. I have to admit that the defense backs suck more than I can even describe in words. In the 3rd quarter, they forced me to turn off the game and I didn’t even see the big finish. Rivers (Charger’s QB) was dropping the long ball into his receivers hands all night. Freakin’ depressing. Now, we have that behind us and we can start playing with more focus. Another good milestone for the night was Drew Bree’s passing of Johnny Unitas for the TD streak record. Go Drew!

Perhaps the most surprising team to set the chattering agog in Louisiana was the LA Tech Bulldogs. Normally, these guys are not even on my radar except for the fact Tech is my favorite cousin’s Alma mater. He really likes them. Well, he posted an interesting story on Facebook that I will link here: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf–unconventional-attack–la–tech-runs-high-flying-offense-through-its-center–not-qb.html. I, along with a great many other fans, wish we had this offense. Damn straight.

On a positive non-football note, I got to hang out with the Moak boys for some Conference watching. It was uplifting as always. Just have to see if I can actually incorporate some of it into my life. No so easy all the time. :-(

Thanksgiving Weekend

This holiday weekend has been one of highs and lows for me. It started out pretty well when I had Thanksgiving at my Aunt Madge’s house with my cousins Mike and Renee. Renee’s kids were there as well as Aubrey, her granddaughter. I had a great time talking with all of them and eating the food. We had turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, and several other delicious dishes. After that, I went over to my Dad’s and talked to with him and Darlene. I then went to John and Marianne’s house. Jason and DeAnne had arrived from Biloxi, so I got to hang out a little with everyone at John’s. It was a good day although I did get a little irritated. My only brother that I didn’t get to talk to was Doug, who was coming back home from his trip to Gatlinburg. I will see him and everyone else on Dec. 10th though.

Friday was the real high, however, in that I was able to see Arkansas get the stuffing beat out of them by an indomitable LSU team. On to the SEC championship against Georgia and hopefully the NCAA Championship in New Orleans. Arkansas was able to put up 14 points against us initially, which is the biggest deficient we had the entire year. Actually, coming from behind was quite novel as it has been really rare this year. Mathieu and the defense played like professionals. The offense was great as well, especially our depth in running-backs. By the end of the game, dive plays were slicing them like soft cheese. Jefferson played almost the entire game with Lee getting in only a few snaps. I feel quite miffed about this as we are definitely not running a 2 quarterback system. I think it is a slap in the face to Lee, who has proved his ability and loyalty. This was the only stain on an otherwise awesome game. To be honest, it made me wish for some nice pork rather than turkey for dinner. Besides this, I have a message to the rest of the football nation – be afraid, very afraid. Almost every starter on our team is either a Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior. Only a few Seniors and they have great backups behind them. It is downright scary how good LSU is with such a young team.

After that, it seemed to go a little bit downhill. I did not get much sleep as I stayed up to read a book. I was really tired for work Saturday. I know, I know. I accept full responsibility for my actions. I think I got sick from doing this as I slept from 7:00 p.m. Saturday to 9:30 on Sunday. I was feeling too blah for church. The only good thing that came from Sunday was seeing one of the most spectacular episodes of The Walking Dead. This show was getting a little too weak sauce for me and then bam!, it went to another level. Good writing. Yesterday, was a little more of the same. Two nice things happened despite my funky mood – my friends Nathan and Jill had a little girl, Presley Britt, and New Orleans rubbed the Giants’ face in their own mediocrity. If you don’t know it, I will tell you – I despise Eli Manning. It goes back to the 2004 Draft when he refused to play for the San Diego Chargers. I like Peyton, but cheer like crazy when Eli loses. Speaking of the NFL, what is up with Tim Tebow? I am not a fan, but you have to laugh at the fools who said he would not amount to much. I admit to a little bad prognosticating and being a fool, but damn he is winning. It is not pretty, but he is winning.

Perhaps the true low point is that I have decided to sell one of my babies, my SKS. It has brought me great joy in the past but now sits in my closet not doing much. I need the green, so it goes. When my cash flow increases, I may get another or even something else. So, good bye Yugoslavian Type M59/66 SKS. I have only the pictures to remind me of you.

Game of the Year – LSU 9, Alabama 6

Among the ancient Aztecs of what is now Mexico there was a belief that if the god Huitzilopochtli was not given strength through human sacrifice, the world would end as the god no longer had the power to hold back the sun. As each human was slaughtered, Huitzilopochtli was satisfied and all the world settled in its proper order. Today, my world was once more set in its proper order by the defeat of the Alabama Crimson Tide by my beloved LSU Tigers, 9-0. For another year, I was able to look upon the anguished faces of my enemies and taste the sweet flavor of their defeat. I rejoiced! Satan…I mean, Saban, was sent back to Hell…I mean, his locker room for another year to console his team, surrounded no doubt by downcast eyes and the occasional sniffle. Let them tears roll.

The game itself was too exciting for me. My blood pressure shot up through the roof and at one point thought I might have a heart attack. The LSU defensive plays by Mo Claiborne and Eric Reid were able to stop the drives of Alabama. What the game really settled on was field goals. Come on, Saban. You have the best defense in the country and a good offense, yet you cannot find a man to kick the damn ball. Glorious! Four missed field goals (one in OT) and a blocked one do not a National Championship team make. The gameball goes to Wing and Alleman for their golden feet.

Seriously, Alabama has a great team. If they had fixed their special teams issues, I would have been the one crying tonight. Oh well, them’s the brakes.

Aints vs. the Rams

Football on Sunday was a study in what the hell happened. The Saints played like a decent team, but not the one that we had come to expect. The Rams played like the Saints usually do. Brees had 30 completions for 44 attempts. They had possession of the ball almost as long as St. Louis. Total yards were about 30 less than the Rams. Offensively, they had 2 interceptions and the most difficulty running the ball that I had seen this year. The Rams’ back-up quarterback ate up our defense and so did Jackson, their running back.

Why the loss? I tend to put the blame on Sean Peyton having to coach from the booth. Intellectually, I know this is not the real fault as other coaches have done well and this is a well-oiled machine. The game versus the Colts is a witness to that. Emotionally, I feel that they expended too much energy on the Colts and had nothing left over. A zero sum game as it were.  My roommate feels that it was a secret agreement between Tom Benson and the Rams’ owner to give it to the Rams so that the Cardinals are not the only winning team in the Gateway to the West. Maybe, maybe not. I usually don’t tend towards conspiracy theories, but maybe Brees or some player inadvertently insulted a Voodoo Queen before game day. Whatever happened just needs to be fixed.

As a friend noted on Facebook, the Aints showed up but left the S behind.

This Last Week in Review

Oh, last week….what a week it was. LSU and the Saints dominated their opposites. First, let’s begin with LSU. They destroyed Auburn. 393 total yards to Auburn’s 248. Defense was magical. Claiborne and Brookes, Mathieu’s replacement, stepped up and definitely met expectations. This shows that even without the Honey Badger and Ware, we have depth on both sides of the ball. Both Lee and Jefferson each threw a beautiful TD pass to Randle. It seemed like everyone on the team got a chance to rush the ball. Four ball carriers, even without our starter. That’s right, I said 4. A couple of hits on special teams will still be felt three generations later, I’m sure. LSU ended the game 45 against 10 for Auburn, the biggest spread in the history of our many meetings. I carried the glow from this game through half the week. The chant at the end said it all – We want BAMA! Another week until the game of the year – #1 LSU vs #2 Alabama.

Then, on Sunday, I watched the decimation of one of the finest teams of the last decade or so by my beloved Black & Gold. Colts were handed a good ole fashioned beating – Saints 62, Ind. 7. All I can really say is wow. To have your entire season go to crap because of one player on injured reserve. Granted, Manning is a spectacular QB, maybe even one of the greatest. But still, somebody needs to step up. New Orleans played with fire in their bellies and looked unbelievable. Black & Gold Superbowl, baby.

OK, away from sports. I also subbed Monday, Tuesday, and the day that comes after Tuesday at the aforementioned high school where I was quite critical of some of the students. I got to know some of the students a little better and have come to revise my previous opinion. I decided that I would let them hold a mop to clean the floor. Maybe. Despite them acting like bonobos on crack, they are not all bad. Except one kid. He is just annoying. How annoying? I considered homicide, profanity, and momentarily even strong drink (and I don’t mean Sprite). He annoys the other teachers, the other students, no doubt the janitors and lunch ladies, etc. What’s sad is that he doesn’t even realize it, probably. I will not break his heart – high school is difficult enough. The other kids were all most enough to make up for this one blip.

On to some great news – I found out that I passed the Foreign Officers Service Test. I passed the written part and skimmed through barely on the essay. When I say barely, I mean that I think I left a little flesh behind. I had a 6 out of possible 12. The Lord was surely watching out for me. Thank you. The next step is 6 biographical essays due on November 16th. If I pass that (I will find out in late Jan.), then the next step is the Oral Interview. I can but continue on, faithful.

Tonight, I had a really good discussion with my roommate on our jobs and futures. We are in the same boat…well, same trailer literally and same boat proverbially. Both of us do not make enough to cover beyond our basic expenditures. We needed to take a long, hard look at our paths and make some decisions. It was a good first step.
